Because they play the music in my head
I spend a lot of time riding the bus around town, listening to my iPod. As such, I have a lot of time to sit and think about random things to music. A couple of my favorites are playing out music videos in my head of stories or story ideas, and getting my primary characters together to “play” the music.
Each of my major characters – the protagonists from my primary in-progress stories – has one or two instruments they can play (even if it’s not canon for the story or setting). Finding out at first who played what was a fun project on its own. Either the character would jump in for that instrument part, or I’d go “wait I need someone to play -instrument-” and I’d appearify said instrument in the hands of a character I thought might play it.
(It’s frequently hilarious when they don’t. Liesa’s reaction when I tried her for violin one time was priceless. You’d think I handed her a dead rodent! Kia, on the other hand, just sort of looks at the instrument disdainfully.)
Anyway! I thought it’d be fun to list out all of those characters and which instrument(s) they play.
- Theo: Violin, viola, baritone vocals
- Sam: Nothing yet, the lazy sot.
- Elias: Tenor vocals, saxophone, backup violin
- Clara: Drums
- Liesa: Guitar, bass guitar, backup vocals
- Kia: Keyboard (piano, harpsichord, synth, etc.)
- Darros*: Saxophone, cello, tenor vocals
- Anna: Guitar, vocals
Charlotte used to play something, but I don’t remember what. She’s kind of wandered off… Probably because she’s undergoing serious identity shifts.
And I still don’t have a flute player!
* This is a place-holder name that will undoubtedly change when I get back to the project
