Clockwork Dreams

Enthusiastically Unstable; Eloquently Retrotech

An entertaining encounter

So there I was, browsing the soup aisle at the local-to-the-office 7-11 in the hopes of finding something edible. As I straighten up from peering at the instant ramen on the bottom shelf, a man just down the aisle catches my eye.

“Hey, is that your car out front?”

I grace him with my very best impression of a deer in headlights – a standard response, as my mental transmission gears slip and whirr while struggling to process the fact of social interaction.

“It’s a really pretty car,” he continues, seemingly oblivious to my incomprehension and quite complimentary.

Finally, I managed to switch from what is this strange creature to a normal comprehension of spoken English and realized he was asking if I was the owner of a car parked outside the store.

I gave him a friendly smile and shook my head. “No, it’s not my car.”

The man looked surprised and a bit bewildered. “It’s not?”

“No, it’s not.”

This response didn’t seem to alleviate his confusion, so I realized it may be a good idea for me to clarify. “I walked.”

“Oh.” He glanced back to the front of the store, looking oddly disinterested. “It’s a real pretty car.”

I just nodded and smiled as he walked away, complimenting the car in my general direction.

I still have no idea which car he was talking about.
